Yesterday night, the Cincinnati Reds sought to turn the page on a three-game losing streak and did so with a 6-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays, thanks in part to Spencer Steer's tiebreaking RBI double during a four-run burst in the sixth inning. This win was a particularly crucial pivot as they launched into a seven-game road trip.
Reds outfielder TJ Friedl also played a key role, hammering his 10th home run of the season and notching three hits in the game. "Getting swept, it's never fun, but you move on," Friedl was reported to have said by WCPO. "That's what this team does well. You can't dwell on the past." Ty France bolstered the Reds' effort with two hits and two RBIs, making sure not to let the game slip away.
The Blue Jays, meanwhile, failed to keep pace despite Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hitting his 26th homer of the season and Ernie Clement taking one deep as well. Toronto's starting pitcher Kevin Gausman, who had a record of 11-9 before the game, surrendered four runs, three of them earned, over five-plus innings. It was his first loss on the mound since July 5. His team's manager, John Schneider, opined that Gausman's performance deserved a better fate, citing "Some close misses around the zone" and the Reds' ability to spoil his pitches by fouling them off, according to AP News.
