As Halloween approaches, Nickel City bar in East Downtown Houston will turn into a haunted pop-up called Black Lagoon. Running from October 11 to October 31, the bar will offer Halloween-themed cocktails and a spooky atmosphere, celebrating its first Halloween since opening at 2910 McKinney, as reported by Houston Chronicle.
Austin's Nickel City bar is also joining the Halloween fun by transforming into Moe's Tavern from "The Simpsons." Former "Simpsons" writer Bill Oakley will visit the bar on October 19 and 20, a collaboration highlighted by the Austin Eater website. Enhancing the haunt, the bar's on-site truck Delray Cafe will be rebranded as Krusty Burger, offering themed delights akin to the animated series.
The Halloween pop-up concept was created by bar industry veterans Erin Hayes and Kelsey Ramage, who first brought it to New Orleans' Dungeon. Their idea has since spread internationally, appearing in cities across Canada and Mexico, with events in 35 cities this year, as chronicled by the Houston Chronicle. With such an expansive reach, these pop-ups have carved out a unique niche in celebrating the haunting season across North America.
The Moe's Tavern experience at Nickel City is a blend of culture, charity, and nostalgia, featuring a drinks and food event alongside Nixta Taqueria. Proceeds from the The Bumblebee Man x Nixta Taqueria event will be directed towards a staff support fund amidst the restaurant's permitting issues, as described by Austin Eater. Patrons can enjoy creative cocktails like the revamped Flaming Moe, made with "cherry kough syrup" and various spirits, topped with a lit lime floater cap. Other drinks include Malk Punch, Prank Calls selections like Anita Bath, and Squishee frozen cocktails, including a pumpkin spice Irish coffee.
