St. Petersburg's transit scene is gearing up for a significant boost as the SunRunner system plans to add a new station near the bustling downtown Pier by late 2024. This development is fueled by the community's calls for greater accessibility and integration with the SunRunner system. According to FOX 13 News, PSTA CEO Brad Miller emphasized that their efforts are a response to the wishes of citizens, writers, staff, and elected officials to provide that vital link to the waterfront.
The announcement, made ceremoniously as state and local leaders convened to break ground, was shared by U.S. Representative Kathy Castor who, having grown up in St. Petersburg, has personally witnessed its transformation. Castor, noted by FOX 13 News, pushed for support at both state and federal levels, remarking on the area's vibrancy and the SunRunner's contribution to its growing appeal.
With additional funds from the initial SunRunner project, which concluded $5 million under budget, the new station, poised near the Sundial parking garage, comes at a time when public transportation is under scrutiny for its economic and environmental impact. The new station will feature elevated platforms, better accessibility, and real-time signage—amenities similar to those at existing stops, as detailed in a report by St. Pete Catalyst. The SunRunner route's success, recently marking a noteworthy ridership milestone, emphasizes the community's embrace of the service.
Gina Driscoll, PSTA Board Chairperson, and St. Pete City Councilwoman, channeled the collective sense of pride, telling WTSP, "The hybrid electric vehicles reduce the number of cars on the road and lower carbon emissions. Traffic crashes are also significantly down along the corridor since service began." With three new SunRunner buses bolstering its fleet, the promise of a 15-minute frequency on the line is closer to fulfillment.
