In a move that highlights a growing focus on public health over profits, Stop & Shop, the Massachusetts-based grocery retailer, has made clear its intention to eliminate the sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products from its stores. As reported by WCVB, the company announced that by August 31, 2024, consumers will no longer find tobacco on the shelves of any of its 360 locations spanning five states including Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey.

A move underscoring the company's endeavor to foster enhanced health outcomes Stop & Shop president Gordon Reid emphasized the company's sense of responsibility extends well past its aisles and, according to a statement obtained by Stop & Shop's official press release, Stop & Shop is, "committed to taking bold steps to help our associates, customers, and communities work towards better health outcomes," a sentiment echoed by the retailer's decision to pull tobacco from its inventory. To help encourage smoking cessation, the grocery chain is organizing buyback events on August 28, 2024, where customers, specifically the first 100 participants, can exchange unopened tobacco products for a gift card and other incentives, including smoking cessation aids.

Fuelled by a partnership with health organizations, namely the American Cancer Society and its advocacy affiliate the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), the initiative has been lauded by ACS CAN CEO Dr. Karen E. Knudsen, who told Boston 25 News, “This is a step in the right direction toward ending Big Tobacco’s influence on kids, and we know even more can be done to reduce the toll of tobacco in our communities.” The World Health Organization cites that roughly 780 million individuals wish to quit smoking globally, yet a mere 30% have the necessary tools to do so, thus making initiatives like these ever more critical.

Beyond removing tobacco products, Stop & Shop aims to heighten community health through services provided by in-store registered dietitians and pharmacy associates, who, according to Katie Thornell, Director of Pharmacy, offer "guidance for smoking cessation, as well as immunization recommendations for those who may have lowered immunity as a result of smoking," in a statement detailed by Stop & Shop. Customers looking for counsel on quitting smoking are encouraged to meet with the company's pharmacists, who boast specialized training in the matter and this is just one aspect of Stop & Shop’s broader commitment to community wellness which also encompasses nutrition education and food assistance initiatives.
