A 17-year-old suspect has been taken into custody in connection to the shooting that left 14-year-old Kamiaya Cleveland dead and two others injured in Aurora last month. The incident occurred at Highlands Hollow Park during what has been described as a party, 9News reported. In the chaos breaking out around 9:15 p.m. on July 6, three young girls, a 15-year-old and two 14-year-olds, were rushed to the hospital, where Kamiaya succumbed to her injuries.
Arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder amidst a slew of other charges, the teen was already in custody for a separate case when apprehended. According to The Denver Post, the charges include "10 counts each of first-degree attempted murder and attempted assault; and counts of felony menacing, tampering with evidence and illegal firearm use." This illustrates the layers of violence a moment carried, forever altering numerous lives in the span of a few heartbeats. Due to her status as a minor, her name has not been released, pending decisions on whether she will be charged as an adult, Denver7 noted.
The Aurora Police Department affirmed that they do not believe there are other suspects in this fatal encounter, as per The Denver Post. The investigation that led to her arrest points to a solitary figure responsible for the shots fired, sending waves of grief through a community already navigating the profound complexities of adolescent life juxtaposed against a backdrop of recurring gun violence.
