Chaos ensued on the streets of Simi Valley yesterday morning when a suspect, later identified as Cane Duran, 28, allegedly involved in an assault with a deadly weapon, led police on a high-speed chase. According to a report provided by the Simi Valley Police Department, officers responded Code 3—indicating the use of lights and sirens—to the corner of Bridget Ave. and Heywood St. around 10 a.m. after reports of a confrontation involving a gun.
Upon their arrival, officers encountered a suspect barricaded in a grey Infiniti. Despite police orders, the suspect refused to exit his vehicle and instead chose to flee the scene, terrorizing motorists as he weaved dangerously through traffic at perilous speeds. However, it was later revealed through the course of the investigation that no gun was found at the alleged assault scene, the victim was unscathed and had expressed no interest in pressing charges. Prioritizing public safety, the police terminated their pursuit upon learning this information.
The situation reached a resolution by midday when Duran's vehicle was located near Olsen Rd. and the 23 Freeway. The police were able to make contact with Duran, identifying him as the earlier fugitive. Giving the narrative an unexpected turn, Duran was discovered to be operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol—a detail that potentially sheds light on the reckless nature of his earlier escape.
The arrest was not without its due process; Duran was placed in custody on multiple charges, including Felony Evading (2800 VC), DUI (23152 VC), and Resisting Arrest (148 PC), and was later transported to Ventura County Jail. In the face of a potentially dangerous standoff and a pursuit that could have resulted in tragic consequences, the incident was ultimately resolved without further escalation or injury, as reported by the Simi Valley Police Department.
