A 37-year-old Houston man, identified as Desmond Taylor, ended up back in the hands of law enforcement on Sunday in League City after a brief period of unsanctioned liberation. Taylor, who had been initially detained on allegations of domestic assault, apparently exploited his temporary stay at a medical facility to attempt an escape. The Houston Chronicle reported that the escapee had been under the watch of the League City Police when he absconded from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Victory Lakes around 1 a.m. Sunday.
Earlier, on Friday, League City officers had arrested Taylor on suspicion of assault on a family member and at a bail set of $200,000, was confined to the League City Jail, CW39 notes. During his time behind bars, Taylor complained of a medical issue, which saw his transfer to the hospital for evaluation. Authorities located Taylor's hospital gown discarded outside the building, an indication of his fleeting bid for freedom.
In response to Taylor's unexpected departure, League City Police, with assistance from officers of neighboring agencies, rolled out a wide dragnet that eventually led to his capture just a short distance from the hospital. Found at 1500 West League City Parkway, Taylor's time as a fugitive spanned nearly 10 hours before he was returned to custody.
Escaping around 1 a.m. from his room in the hospital, the patient-cum-fugitive re-engaged with law enforcement hours after his daring departure. According to CW39, Desmond Taylor is now once again under the Galveston County Jail's roof as of Sunday night.
