A Tampa man faces a minimum of seven years to life in federal prison following an indictment on charges related to a recent gas station robbery. Brandale Swails, 29, has been charged with Hobbs Act robbery and using a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida announced the charges after Swails allegedly engaged in a violent confrontation at a local gas station.

On the day of the robbery, Swails is accused of having arrived at the said gas station riding a bicycle. Upon entering the premises, he reportedly pointed a gun at the clerk and demanded money. The frightened employee attempted to take refuge behind the counter. However, Swails was determined to quickly follow, jumping over the counter and continually aiming the gun at the clerk. In an alleged attempt to intimidate, Swails threatened to shoot if the clerk refused to open the register, subsequently forcing the victim into a bathroom while still under the threat of the gun. Following the encounter, Swails is said to have fled the scene on his bicycle. Two weeks later, he was captured by the police after they discovered him hidden in a bedroom closet, according to a statement obtained by the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Though an indictment itself does not establish guilt, it serves as the formal accusation needed to bring a suspect to trial. Swails, like all defendants in the American judicial system, is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. This case was diligently investigated by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in collaboration with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant United States Attorney Diego F. Novaes is set to prosecute the case.

The robbery has been wrapped into Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide initiative aimed to reduce violent crime. Emphasizing the importance of building community trust, and backstopping strategic enforcement priorities with measurement, the program seeks to forge safer neighborhoods through collaboration with both law enforcement and local organizations. "This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence, and to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone," said the Department of Justice. Launched in 2021, the violent crime reduction strategy has since sought to embody these core values, the Department explained on its website.
