Texas residents gearing up for end-of-summer travel received a boost as gas prices dipped ahead of the Labor Day weekend. According to AAA Texas, the average statewide gas price now stands at $2.99 per gallonfor regular unleaded fuel, offering slight relief compared to last year's figures, reported The Houston Chronicle.

With many Texans planning road trips, the lower fuel costs are a welcome trend. "Texans planning Labor Day road trips will be paying less at the pump than last year," said Doug Shupe, a AAA Texas representative. In addition, to conserve fuel, he recommended packing luggage inside vehicles, abiding by speed limits, and ensuring that tires are properly inflated. Cities such as Houston and Galveston-Texas City have seen significant decreases in gas prices from the previous year, with respective drops of 43 cents and 40 cents per gallon, although some stations may still feature prices above $3, as detailed by The Houston Chronicle.

Meanwhile, air travel is also experiencing a surge, according to CBS News. Houston airports anticipate nearly 888,000 travelers, and the Transportation Security Administration is preparing for a record-breaking Labor Day week, with an expected 17 million people to be screened. On the roads, AAA Texas advises travelers to avoid peak congestion times in the afternoons and evenings of August 29 and 30, suggesting morning departures or traveling on August 31.

In terms of destinations, the trend this year leans towards cooler climates within the United States. "Seattle is the No. 1 Labor Day weekend destination, up nearly 30% from last year," Galen Grillo, vice president and general manager of AAA Texas, told CBS News. Destinations like Anchorage and Juneau also made the top 10 list, with Alaska cruises seeing particular popularity. Despite an increase in domestic travel bookings by 9%, international travel over the Labor Day weekend has dipped by 4% compared to last year, the cost to travel internationally has surged by 11%.

While AAA Texas does caution that hurricanes impacting the Gulf of Mexico could cause an uptick in gas prices, for now, Texans can hit the road or take to the skies with a bit more financial ease as they seek respite from the summer heat, or embark on their last adventure before the fall season sets in. The decrease in gas prices and strategic suggestions for travel times aim to make the long weekend as smooth and cost-effective as possible for holiday-goers.
