Texas DPS Intensifies Road Safety Enforcement for Labor Day Weekend With Operation CARESource: Texas Department of Public Safety

As we approach Labor Day weekend, the Texas Department of Public Safety is ramping up its efforts to ensure road safety for all travelers. The agency has announced an enforcement boost through Operation Crash Awareness Reduction Effort (CARE), which focuses on the vigilance of Texas Highway Patrol Troopers from Aug. 30 to Sept. 2, statewide. This includes targeting speeding, impaired driving, and failure to comply with Texas’ Move Over, Slow Down law among other traffic infractions, according to a recent announcement.

Last year, the effort yielded over 43,179 warnings and citations, with 4,332 given for speeding and 990 for lack of insurance. In addition, there were 421 citations for not using seat belts or child restraints as well as 207 for Move Over, Slow Down law violations. Arrests included 193 for DWI charges and 222 for other felony offenses. "Too often, these long holiday weekends mean problems on the roads," said DPS Director Steven McCraw, "Instead, as we mark the end of summer, let’s keep safety our top priority by following traffic laws and ensuring everyone has a sober ride home," as stated by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Moving vehicles from traffic lanes in the event of a non-injury crash is both a safety measure and in some areas, a legal requirement. The Texas Roadside Assistance number is another resource travelers are encouraged to store in their phones, reachable at 1-800-525-5555. Road conditions can be monitored at the Drive Texas website. Furthermore, the iWatchTexas program serves as an important tool for reporting suspicious activity—a utility underscored by the gatherings expected during the holiday weekend. Emergencies, however, remain in the domain of a 911 call. The DPS has complemented this information with a Labor Day Weekend PSA video, tailored to emphasize safety and vigilance during this time of increased travel.
