Amidst the observance of National Breastfeeding Month, the success of the Texas Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) shines as it hits a half-century mark of service. The Texas WIC has dubbed their theme "Support Every Step of the Way," which encapsulates the program's commitment to aiding mothers and families in their journey toward achieving breastfeeding goals.
In a history marked by support, more than 7 million women have been assisted by Texas WIC since its inception in 1974. Serving an impressive number each month, the program currently aids over 780,000 women, infants, and children. In celebration of their golden anniversary, Texas WIC has affirmed their continued dedication to mothers during all stages of breastfeeding, as stated by Amanda Hovis, nutrition education and clinic services director for Texas WIC, in an interview with Texas Health and Human Services. "Whether it’s pregnancy preparation classes, support with latch or milk supply, or coming up with a plan for breastfeeding and returning to work, WIC is here to help families every step of the way," she said.
A key component of Texas WIC's offerings includes a complimentary 24/7 lactation support hotline, along with peer counselors in breastfeeding, lactation consultants, and free nutritional education for all Texas mothers. Additionally, the program provides eligible women who are unable to obtain one through their health plan with a breast pump at no cost. Originated to ensure that moms and their infants have the resources they need to start and maintain breastfeeding practices as part of a healthy start in life, WIC also supplies a variety of nutritious food options, along with breastfeeding and nutrition classes, not to mention one-on-one counseling from pregnancy up until the child reaches five years of age.
