Sarasota's school year began with a tragic event today, when a 12-year-old girl was critically injured after being run over by her mother's SUV. The incident took place in a drop-off line at Booker Middle School, as reported by the Florida Highway Patrol. The girl was said to have exited the vehicle and, upon dropping her school supplies, bent down to retrieve them from under the car. Unaware of her daughter's position, the mother pulled forward, leading to the tragic accident.
According to FOX 13 News, the child was air-lifted to All Children’s Hospital to receive emergency care for the critical injuries sustained. Senior Trooper Kenneth Watson said "Florida Highway Patrol wants to reiterate how incredibly important it is to make sure that you see your child, not only exit the vehicle, but then get out of the path of the vehicle and not make any type of assumption. Here we are day one and we've already had a tragedy."
Details regarding the girl's condition have not yet been officially released. WFLA News indicated that the Florida Highway Patrol is currently investigating the crash to unravel the sequence of events leading to the incident.
