In the realm of illicit finance, a chapter comes to a close as 24-year-old Tyler Jacob, linked with the "Trap Boys" gang, concedes to a litany of charges that include conspiracy to commit bank fraud, aggravated identity theft, witness tampering, and destroying evidence. As reported on the Department of Justice's website, Jacob's plea could land him a tenure of up to 20 years in federal lock-up.
Across two years, from October 2021 through October 2023, Jacob's endeavors to deceive financial entities stretched far and wide throughout Florida's Middle District. The machinations were calculated, forging and modifying checks with amounts that boasted up to $100,000 to deceive businesses while using an assembly of accomplices to carefully deposit and quickly abscond with the ill-gotten funds. Jacob, according to the plea, did even actively seek to recruit others to continue to further expand his web of deceit.
The conspiracy saw Jacob and his conspirators deposit an estimated $50,000 worth of sham checks weekly. The intended loss to the financial institutions eclipsed more than half a million dollars, a staggering sum amassed through nefarious precision.
On January 23rd of this year, law enforcers beat down the door of Jacob's home with a search warrant in hand. Jacob barricaded, feverishly attempting to feed evidence to a shredder that jammed in protest. As the FBI and Polk County Sheriff's Office surveyed the chaos, with scattered shreds of paper much like confetti, they unearthed a trove of incriminating items, a checkbook, financial documents, printers, scanners, and software all intended for the craft of fraud.
