The gravity of domestic violence and arson has once again been underscored in Stanislaus County, as Santiago Ojeda Astorga, 33, from Turlock, received a 13-year state prison sentence. The conviction, as announced by District Attorney Jeff Laugero, stemmed from incidents occurring on September 4, 2023, when Astorga assaulted his girlfriend and later escalated to arson.
Reports indicate neighbors were first to alert the authorities upon hearing a man assaulting a woman in their apartment complex, leading to police intervention. The victim, described as Astorga's girlfriend and mother to their two children, was found with injuries. Astorga, who had fled the scene, was not at the scene when authorities arrived, and according to Stanislaus County District Attorney, the children were present during the assault but were unharmed.
In a turn of events that same day, Astorga's violent spree continued at a nearby apartment complex where he went looking for his girlfriend. Unable to find her, he threatened to set the place ablaze and proceeded to start a fire in the carport area, using an accelerant that damaged both vehicles and two apartment units. The @turlockfire department was able to extinguish the fire before it caused widespread damage.
Astorga's apprehension came a few hours following the arson, with both the Stanislaus County Fire Investigative Unit and the @turlockpolice collaborating on the investigations. Deputy District Attorney Vita Palazuelos led the prosecution, effectively delivering justice for the crimes committed.
