Tragedy struck at the Delta Technical Operations facility in Atlanta, where two employees lost their lives and one more was seriously injured yesterday. The deceased, identified by the Clayton County Medical Examiner's office as Mirko Marweg, 58, and Luis Aldarondo, 37, were involved in an incident that involved "aircraft wheel components," according to 11Alive.
While Delta Air Lines has not confirmed the specifics, multiple sources informed FOX 5 Atlanta that the incident at approximately 5 a.m. involved a tire explosion when disassembling wheel components for maintenance. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), though not representing employees at this facility, offered condolences and has extended their resources to the impacted individuals.
The injured employee's identity remains undisclosed at this time, and the company is yet to release further details about their condition. As reported by 11Alive, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident alongside Delta Air Lines.
Following the accident, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens expressed his sympathies, stating, "I offer my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased Delta employees." He also acknowledged the ongoing efforts of Atlanta's first responders on the scene and conveyed his hopes for quick and complete recoveries for the injured, as provided by 11Alive and FOX 5 Atlanta. A Delta spokesperson indicated that 24/7 counseling services would be available to the families and team members affected by the tragedy.
Details surrounding what led up to the fatal incident remain under tight investigation. Delta TechOps, the airline's division in charge of maintenance, repair, and overhaul activities, plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and functionality of aircraft. The area of the accident, designated for wheel and brake maintenance, will undoubtedly become a focus for both internal and regulatory inquiries.
Delta's executive vice president and chief of operations, John Laughter, addressed his team in a somber note, which was obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta, emphasizing the heartbreaking nature of the event and assuring employees that their "safety and wellbeing comes first – always." The airline has pledged full support to the bereaved families during this difficult period.
