Two individuals found their day on the Kalamazoo River taking an unexpected and dangerous turn when their kayaks overturned near the Allegan City Dam. The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office, in a report by FOX 17, stated that deputies, along with local police and firefighting units, responded to the scene where they found the victims clinging desperately to a tree amid the river's fast-moving current. Remarkably, only one of the kayakers had the foresight to wear a flotation device.

Upon their arrival, rescue teams sprang into action, supplying lines to the stranded kayakers and deploying a watercraft to facilitate their extraction from the river. However, as highlighted by WOODTV, the difficulty of navigating river bends where the currents are particularly strong posed a significant challenge even to experienced boaters, bringing yet another unforgiving element into the fray.

The near-tragedy has prompted a warning from law enforcement, emphasizing the perils associated with kayaking on stretches of the river between Allegan, Plainwell, and the southern county line. An increase in water rescues in recent times has been noted, prompting the Sheriff's Office to underscore the considerable risk involved. “Anyone venturing out onto the Kalamazoo River must take into account they do so at their own risk. Rescue personnel may not be able to get to victims in time to save them due to the lack of watercraft access points,” stated the Allegan County Sheriff's Office in comments obtained by WOODTV.

In echoing the sentiments of the Allegan County Sheriff's Office, deputies reiterated through a clearly concerned statement, as reported by WZZM 13, "There has been a recent increase in incidents involving water rescues and kayaks in the Kalamazoo River." They recommended that, especially novices, should seek slower stretches of the river, where rescue teams can respond more quickly and effectively due to better accessibility for emergency equipment.
