The spirit of community service and practical healthcare solutions took center stage as University of Cincinnati (UC) students rallied to organize a free health clinic catering to the needs of the local community. The initiative realized through a pop-up clinic held at St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati on July 27 and 28 demonstrates the potential of young medical professionals in shaping accessible healthcare. Guided by Vishwa Ramu, a senior from the UC College of Medicine's undergraduate Medical Sciences program, the clinic provided care for 235 individuals over two days.
To extend beyond the university walls, Ramu sought to share his first-hand experience gained while volunteering with the Remote Area Medical (RAM) group in Tennessee with his peers. According to a University of Cincinnati article, Ramu expressed, "It was an incredible experience and being able to help give underserved communities free health care as an undergrad was a rare opportunity". Participants hailed from various UC colleges, including Medicine, Arts and Sciences, Design, Architecture, Art and Planning, and Nursing, evidencing a multidisciplinary approach to community service.
Upon returning to UC, the Cincinnati Chapter of RAM, founded by Ramu, exemplifies the institution's commitment to healthcare outreach. These clinics have been notably operational across various states, offering various healthcare services indicative of the acute needs that persist in less-served areas. As the RAM initiative continues to seek to reduce healthcare disparities, UC students continue to become actively involved, with the clinic at St. Xavier High School marking the latest instance of their engagement.
These clinics have not only provided essential medical care but have also become a platform for on-the-spot practical solutions. Ramu recalls ensuring that patients did not only receive medical attention but were also able to quickly get examined and leave with "prescription glasses on site the same day," according to the University of Cincinnati news.
