Residents and commuters in Clearwater should prepare for a series of road closures and maintenance projects impacting traffic flow over the coming weeks and months. Local authorities have announced several utility and construction tasks that are necessary to maintain and enhance the city's infrastructure. Among these disruptions, Kings Highway is currently closed between Byram Drive and Alpine Road through Aug. 23 for a sewer repair, with detours clearly marked for drivers, according to the City of Clearwater's official website.
The city's utility crews are also active in the Old Clearwater Bay and Beverly Heights neighborhoods, undertaking manhole inspections with an estimated completion date of Aug. 16. Although no closures are expected in this area, drivers are advised to slow down and heed caution to ensure worker safety. Meanwhile, another sewer repair will shut down Washington Avenue between Jackson Road and Drew Street on Aug. 15 at 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., potentially complicating the morning commute.
Infrastructure upgrades are not confined to underground utilities. The eastbound lane of Magnolia Drive is currently inaccessible due to a bridge damaged by Tropical Storm Debby, and the city has not yet announced a completion date for these repairs. Additionally, portions of the Courtney Campbell Trail are under reconstruction, affected by both natural wear and the recent Hurricane Idalia.
Travelers on U.S. 19 will encounter a more protracted construction schedule as the Florida Department of Transportation embarks on a significant road and pedestrian safety improvement project. Slated for completion in 2029, the work includes new interchanges and pedestrian access points, such as an underpass and a bridge. Similarly, Old Coachman Road is closed for bridge replacement, with local access still available to key destinations in the vicinity. Further details on these extensive projects are available on the City of Clearwater's website.
Development projects are also contributing to road use disruptions. Gulfview Boulevard is currently closed between Second Street and Hamden Drive during select daytime hours for construction work in front of the Opal Sands Resort. The road is anticipated to be cleared after Aug. 9. Fifth Street, meanwhile, will stay closed until October 31.
