Commuters frequenting US 290 at Trautwein Road can sigh a collective breath of relief as the intersection reopens after months of closure. The area has been under construction since February 2024 to address crucial safety concerns and following its completion, Hays County announced that the roads were once again welcoming traffic beginning August 5.
During the construction phase, Hays County and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) have worked to swiftly implement several enhancements that aim to improve the overall safety and efficiency of this travel hub. Motorists are informed to expect normal traffic patterns now that the detour has been lifted, and drivers heading westbound on US 290 will be pleased to find a new dedicated right turn lane leading onto Trautwein Road.
According to a release by Hays County, the project's scope included lowering Trautwein Road at its intersection with US 290 to enhance sight lines, the addition of retaining walls, and an upgrade to the intersection signal for improved traffic flow. This package of infrastructure improvements was brought to life to reduce the risk of accidents that the area was notorious for in the past.
"This project has been a passion of mine since taking office in 2019," Hays County Commissioner Walt Smith shared with an exuberant tone. "The intersection has had numerous safety concerns and major accidents for years. I’m proud that by proactively partnering with TxDOT, we delivered this project on budget and on time while improving safety for all our residents."
