Thousands of cans of powdered baby formula have been recalled from shelves in many CVS and H-E-B stores across 12 states due to unsafe levels of Vitamin D, officials from the Food and Drug Administration have informed, as reported by Austin American Statesman. Perrigo Company, the manufacturer of the formula, initiated a voluntary recall of approximately 16,500 cans after discovering that nutrient levels exceeded federally mandated limits. The specific product under recall is the store brand Premium Infant Formula with Iron Milk-Based Powder.

According to KXAN, the recalled products, which were shipped to H-E-B Grocery Company, LP in Texas and to CVS in states including Texas, Florida, California, and nine others, are not expected to cause health problems for most infants after short-term consumption. However, the potential for complications exists, especially for certain children with existing health issues such as impaired renal function. To date, no adverse incidents related to excessive Vitamin D levels have been reported.

Customers have been advised to discontinue the use of the recalled formula and contact Perrigo Consumer Affairs with any questions or concerns. In a statement obtained by KXAN, Perrigo has directed consumers wishing to communicate inquiries to call their consumer affairs line at 1-800-538-9543, operational Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
