The Warwick community has been shaken by a grim discovery in a local man's residence. On Monday, the Warwick Police Department apprehended 22-year-old Michael Diaz after animal control officers found seven dogs in varying states of neglect and decay in his Sand Pond Road home. Three of the dogs were deceased, while the remaining four were described as emaciated and severely malnourished, necessitating immediate medical attention, according to a report by the Boston Globe.
Authorities were alerted to the situation after a report of a visibly emaciated dog in Diaz's backyard. Upon investigation, animal control officers discovered one dog severely "emaciated, covered in flies and fly larva with open sores on its ears." Inside the home, officers found the remaining animals in conditions described by Sgt. Nelson Carriero as "deplorable," with "an overwhelming odor of urine, feces and decay" permeating the residence, as reported by WPRI.
Diaz was subsequently arraigned in Kent County District Court, where he faced multiple charges of animal cruelty, including three felony counts related to the dogs' deaths. Though he did not enter a plea, he was released on $5,000 personal recognition and ordered to undergo mental health monitoring, with his next court appearance scheduled for December. The information surrounding Diaz's arraignment and subsequent release, as well as details of a court-ordered mental health assessment, were provided by WPRI.
Meanwhile, the four surviving dogs, described by Carriero as "skeletal," are currently receiving care at the Warwick Animal Shelter. There is a potential for these animals to be put up for adoption once they are medically cleared. The investigation into this incident remains active, with Warwick Police urging anyone with information to get in touch with authorities. This appeal to the public was echoed in the statements provided by the Warwick Police, as noted in the initial report from the Boston Globe.
The stark reality of this situation has resonated throughout the Warwick community, igniting conversations about the welfare of animals and the responsibility of pet owners. The case against Diaz, especially given the severity of the charges, sheds light on the ongoing challenge of addressing and preventing animal cruelty.
