On Monday, the Warwick Police Department apprehended 22-year-old Michael Diaz after animal control officers found seven dogs in varying states of neglect and decay in his Sand Pond Road home. Three of the dogs were deceased, while the remaining four were described as emaciated and severely malnourished, necessitating immediate medical attention, according to a report by the Boston Globe.
Authorities were alerted to the situation after a report of a visibly emaciated dog in Diaz's backyard. Upon investigation, animal control officers discovered one dog severely "emaciated, covered in flies and fly larva with open sores on its ears." Inside the home, officers found the remaining animals in conditions described by Sgt. Diaz was subsequently arraigned in Kent County District Court, where he faced multiple charges of animal cruelty, including three felony counts related to the dogs' deaths.
