Westmoreland County native and Olympic newcomer Bridget Williams's quest for pole vaulting glory came to an early end in the Paris Olympics qualifying round on Monday, as she failed to clear the 4.55 meters needed to continue her run towards an Olympic medal, as reported by TribLIVE. Williams, representing Team USA, showed promise as she cleared her first two attempts with ease, including a respectable vault of 4.4 meters, but her Olympic journey culminated with her 12th-place finish in her heat and 22nd overall, leaving her just outside the top 20 qualifiers advancing to Wednesday's finals.
Despite a strong start, where Williams cleared the initial heights including a leap of 4.4 meters, she didn't cut the list of elite athletes who automatically advanced to the finals, a group that required athletes to vault 4.7 meters or be among the 12 best performers, which ultimately amounted to 20 qualifiers since no one cleared 4.7 meters and 11 managed to clear 4.55 meters, as detailed by WPXI.
The only American to advance to the pole vault finals is Katie Moon, the defending gold medalist who managed to clear the critical 4.55-meter mark. Williams, 28, although unable to reach the finals in her first Olympic appearance, has an impressive track record, including first place at the team trials earlier this summer where she cleared 4.73 meters, boasting a past as a three-time All-American and two-time outdoor ACC individual champion during her tenure at Virginia.
