A husband and wife duo face charges of drug smuggling following a meticulous operation within the walls of the Westmoreland County Prison. John Joseph Kukonik, 35, and Olivia A. Weber, 46, allegedly conspired to supply drugs to inmates by concealing suboxone strips within a garment designed for a court appearance. Suboxone is recognized for its use in treating opioid dependence but can also induce a high if misused, as reported by TribLIVE.

According to TribLIVE, authorities unearthed multiple conversations between Kukonik and Weber, who were interred within the prison, about using clothing as a vessel for the drugs. Weber’s bail was set at $50,000 while Kukonik’s was established at $75,000, both confined to the Hempfield lockup. Surveillance video allegedly captured Kukonik manipulating a suit jacket, allegedly dropped off by Weber, to extract two orange objects, which he then consumed.

Suboxone misuse came to light when seven other inmates within proximity of Kukonik tested positive for the drug. Following jailhouse calls and in-person visits, investigators pieced together conversations between the couple that discussed smuggling plans and financial gains. As reported by the Westmoreland County District Attorney's Office, detectives asserted that while suboxone is prescribed in a powder form to certain inmates as part of a medical program, the substance Kukonik distributed was in strip form.

Preliminary hearings are slated for August 20 following this unraveling event. Sentencing for Kukonik, stemming from a previous conviction, is expected on August 22, while Weber has previously been sentenced to probation for hindering apprehension in a separate incident.
