A police shooting in Chandler resulted in the death of a woman after officers responded to a domestic violence incident. The Chandler Police Department confirmed the incident took place near Dobson and Germann Roads, as reported by FOX 10 Phoenix. The police were not injured during the encounter.
According to the initial release by police, officers arrived following reports of a disturbance and set up a perimeter around the suspected apartment. Breaking noises were heard within. A woman, armed and emerging from the apartment, did not comply with police commands to drop her weapon, which tragically resulted in the officers firing upon her; she was pronounced dead by medical officials shortly after.
In a tragic unfolding caught on video by a resident, the officer can be heard pleading with the woman to drop the gun, emphasizing his desire not to inflict harm. Despite his prolonged efforts, the situation escalated, ending in gunfire. "He was just shouting to her trying to give her orders, commands. He waited a long time in my opinion before he did anything,” Susie Delancey, a witness to the incident, told 12 News. This chilling encounter raises urgent questions about the thin, hair-trigger line between order and chaos.
Following the incident, it was discovered that no other individuals were present in the suspect's apartment, disappointing hopes that the loud noises reported might have been caused by something other than destruction. The East Valley Critical Incident Response Team will undertake an investigation into the shooting, as reported by Detective Eva Zermeno to 12 News. The community, thankfully, is not under any further threat, as per Chandler police's statements.
