Last Wednesday, an 18-year-old woman, Aleigha Rae Dekeyser, led Florida Highway Patrol troopers on a high-speed chase through Cape Coral at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour, officials stated. According to WFLA, she was initially stopped for a traffic violation around 8:53 p.m., but she subsequently fled the scene, turning off her headlights and driving the wrong way in a 2018 Dodge Charger.
FHP officers implemented a PIT maneuver to halt Dekeyser's vehicle, after which she was apprehended and faced multiple charges, including fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, operating a vehicle with a suspended license, and felony drug possession, detailed in the report by NBC-2. Despite the high-speed pursuit and the potentially dangerous circumstances, no injuries were reported in the incident, with FHP noting the successful apprehension took place on Cape Coral Parkway.
As a result of the chase, Dekeyser was booked into the Lee County Jail, and the pursuit raised additional concerns regarding safety on the roads. As per WTSP, during the pursuit, Dekeyser had allegedly engaged in reckless behavior, endangering the public by driving on the wrong side of the road with deliberately obscured headlights at perilous velocities.
Dekeyser now faces a legal process where she will have to account for her actions leading up to and including the dangerous chase.
