1984 Cold Case Persists, Calaveras County Sheriff's Office Continues Search for Missing Man Jeffrey Askren Near WilseyvilleSource: Facebook/Calaveras County Sheriff's Office

The mystery of Jeffrey Askren, a 30-year-old man reported missing since 1984, lingers without resolution. According to the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office, Askren vanished after failing to arrive at his workplace in Santa Clara on May 1, 1984. The red 1978 Honda Accord he owned was subsequently located parked on Winton Road, east of West Point in Calaveras County, a site within a haunting proximity to the infamous Wilseyville serial killings.

Initially reported as having been seen on April 25, 1984, Askren's car became a silent marker of his absence. Equipped for a different journey, with camera equipment often accompanying him, only a camera tripod and a lens cover near the vehicle suggested a narrative cut abruptly short. Despite his planned check-in at an inn in Sutter Creek on the night of April 23, which he never made, the physical search yielded no further clues.

Described as a man with red hair, and blue eyes, standing 5'9" tall and weighing 150 pounds at the time of his disappearance, Askren's case has challenged investigators for decades. Searches conducted in the snow-dusted landscape where his car was found, offered no traces of footprints leading towards an answer.

Adding to the complexity, Askren's vehicle was found merely six miles from the Wilseyville site, a detail that prompts uneasy connections. Despite this, his remains were never identified among those recovered from the area associated with the serial killings, as noted by the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office facebook post.
