A suspect has been taken into custody in connection with the homicide of 18-year-old Dania Cruz-Mejia in Montgomery Village, according to Montgomery County police. Gerber Luis Sanchez Centeno, 22, faces a first-degree murder charge following Cruz-Mejia's death this past Wednesday. After family members, entering her residence on Calypso Place having not seen her for a long time, found Cruz-Mejia unconscious, authorities were alerted to the scene.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue along with 6th District officers, having responded to an emergency call at around 4:20 p.m., attempted life-saving efforts, but tragically Cruz-Mejia was pronounced dead at the scene. It is expected that an autopsy by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore will determine the definitive cause and manner of death, Montgomery County Police reported.

During the ensuing investigation, detectives identified Cruz-Mejia’s boyfriend, Sanchez Centeno, as a suspect in the case. According to their findings, a warrant was issued on Thursday charging Sanchez Centeno with the young woman's murder.

Sanchez Centeno was arrested the following day, Friday, in Prince George’s County, before detectives, processing him at the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit, saw him be held there without bond. Details regarding the case are still developing.
