As Hurricane Helene churns toward the Yucatán peninsula, Fulton County is bracing for the impact of a Category 1 storm expected to bring significant rainfall and strong winds to the region. In a weather update provided by the Atlanta-Fulton County Emergency Management Agency (AFCEMA), residents have been advised of the impending conditions.
Battalion Chief of Operations & Logistics Chayne Sparagowski detailed the forecast in an update. "This is a category 1 hurricane just off the Yucatán peninsula. It is a fast moving storm which in a way is good that means the overall duration will be less for our area, however because it is fast moving the wind impacts doesn't have a chance to weaken, so those wind impacts will be greater," he explained. The Fulton County news release highlighted the risk of heavy rainfall with expectations ranging from 8 to 10 inches across the Metro area through Friday, and some locales could potentially experience an exceptional 15 to 20 inches.
Alongside the deluge, the winds are poised to be a serious concern. AFCEMA's update prepares Fulton residents for sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph until Friday morning, with a considerable spike early Friday. Sparagowski added, "Early Friday morning as the storm moves through, we're looking at winds possibly around 50 mph and gusting up to 70 mph; this will depend greatly on exactly where it goes," these details, obtained from the official county news release.
