The heat-related death of Ronald Silver II, the Department of Public Works (DPW) employee, continues to cast a long shadow over Baltimore City, as the bereaved family persists in their quest for transparency and accountability. It has been a month since Silver, a father of five in his mid-30s, succumbed to heat exhaustion, a victim of his workplace's cruel summer conditions. Silver's mother, Faith Johnson stated, "My son was everything to us. He was everything. He was a son who helped take care of his ailing mother, he was the son who was there on the front lines for his children and his siblings. He was beloved, he was so beloved," as reported by WMAR-2 News.
Reports indicate Silver died after begging for water on a nearly 100-degree day, raising serious concerns about the working conditions of city employees during bouts of extreme weather. Silver's aunt, LaTonya Mountain, made the family's frustration clear when she said, "We deserve answers. This was someone that was stolen from our lives at the hands of Baltimore City, who refuses to give us answers as we have asked for on a daily basis," in a statement detailed by WBAL-TV.
The Maryland Occupational Safety and Health, Baltimore Police, and a city-hired law firm are probing the circumstances surrounding Silver's death. On top of these efforts, the family's attorney, Thiru Vignarajah, announced the hiring of a private investigator to conduct an independent examination. "If we don't hear answers from public officials soon, it is incumbent upon us to share with the public what we have learned through our own private investigation," Vignarajah stated, as per WBAL-TV. Silver's family has also sought the intervention of the inspector general to investigate the lead-up to his untimely demise.
As detailed by WMAR-2 News, in response to the calls for action, the DPW issued a statement saying, "The Department of Public Works (DPW) is committed to addressing the concerns of Mr. Silver's family as state and local investigations into his death continue. Our priority is to fully cooperate with all inquiries while respecting the investigative process."
