As Pinellas County reels from the impact of Hurricane Helene, residents of the barrier islands face an indefinite wait before they can return home to gauge the devastation. FOX 13 News reported that, as of late Friday morning, the islands stretching from the Dunedin Causeway to Tierra Verde were off-limits, with officials pushing access timelines until they could ensure the safety of the storm-hit areas. Footage circulated by the City of Treasure Island illustrated work crews, in a bid to reclaim the aqueous streets, pushing water away and removing sand.
In a measure to counter potential criminal activity amidst the chaos, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office has ramped up security efforts by deploying deputies to patrol the islands during nighttime hours, ABC Action News has learned, these patrols running from dusk till dawn in search of looters in the vulnerable regions left exposed by the hurricane's wrath. In the face of restricted mobility and the escalating need for relocation services for island dwellers, the sheriff's office has additionally arranged for buses that will commence operation at 6:00 p.m. to transport residents off the islands, with a note that animals are welcome, but due to space constraints passengers are advised to carry only what's essential.
Residents encountering the harsh wake of Hurricane Helene's destruction have yet to see a clear path forward, with local deputies and cleanup crews working diligently to mitigate post-storm risks. According to TampaFP, further assessments will determine when it might be possible for evictees to revisit their homes, with officials declaring reevaluations set for the following day. Preventative measures against looting will maintain a presence, with overnight patrols fortifying the security of the area.
Amid the havoc, the county has provided a lifeline to those trapped: free transportation via buses for residents intent on leaving the barrier islands, as ABC Action News confirms, buses are scheduled to depart starting at 6:00 p.m. this Friday; they will carry evacuees to various points of refuge where they can arrange onward journey to safety or alternate locations, the service aims to aid those in dire need, but with the limitation on space, prioritizes the most crucial exits. The reassurance for residents, in a time marred by uncertainty, comes with the promise that they are not forgotten by the machinations of recovery efforts underway.
