After weeks of closure for urgent repairs, Barton Springs Pool is set to welcome back swimmers this Thursday. An unexpected discovery of two sizable holes in a 1940s-era pipe had precipitated the shutdown, posing serious hazards to pool patrons due to strong underwater currents. "We are thrilled to welcome the community back to Barton Springs Pool in time for the weekend," said Interim PARD Director Angela Means, in a statement obtained by CBS Austin. The city's Parks and Recreation Department (PARD), in collaboration with other municipal departments, spearheaded a fast-paced repair program to address the issues.
With the reopening of this treasured natural pool, adjustments in Austin's other aquatic venues are also rolling out. Deep Eddy Pool, which had extended its hours to accommodate displaced Barton Springs swimmers, will revert to its standard 8 a.m. opening time starting this Thursday. The emergency works involved not just filling in the troublesome holes with gravel but also sealing a section of pipe near "Barking Springs" with concrete — a detail outlined in coverage by KXAN. Yet, these infrastructural band-aids are only part of a broader conservation effort.
Amidst the construction frenzy, Austin's PARD was acutely aware of the need to protect the habitat of endangered salamanders. Measures were taken to ensure that salamander biologists were on site to monitor the fragile ecosystem throughout the repairs. "The repair plan was designed to minimize disruption to endangered salamanders," officials stated, underscoring the city's commitment to environmental stewardship even in the face of urban challenges.
As the pool's gates are ready to unlock, there remains some residual work. Although the waters are now deemed safe for the public, areas of the surrounding lawn will be off-limits temporarily to let new turf take hold. As for maintenance, PARD staff are putting the final touches on the site, which include repainting safety signage and performing last-minute checks to ensure everything is shipshape for the influx of eager Austinites. Before the splashy return on Thursday, local pool fans will have to endure a one-day patience test while the pool undergoes its regularly scheduled weekly cleaning on Wednesday.
