Change is afoot at Mississippi Gateway Regional Park, where the Three Rivers Park District and the City of Brooklyn Park have been cooking up a grand redesign since 2017. Inspired by the collective voice of the Brooklyn Park community, the park is transforming into an all-seasons hub, ready to showcase the natural allure of the Mississippi River and the great outdoors. For anyone looking to swap urban asphalt for green grass and running water, the park promises to be the spot.
After years of blueprints and brainstorming, some of the park's fresh features have already hit the ground running, offering guests a taste of what's to come. New paved trails and parking lots are in place, hinting at the ease with which future visitors will explore the reimagined space. But hold on to your hiking boots, there's more on the way: a Mississippi Gateway Center, an elevated Treetop Trail, and a range of areas dedicated to nature play, learning, and traditional park activities like fishing, picnicking, and even archery.
However, before we can frolic through the final product, there's a small matter of ongoing construction to contend with. A critical piece of the puzzle is currently causing a slight detour in the road—quite literally. West River Road is shut tight, at least until around November 25, as a trail underpass comes to life. The closure spans north from the park entrance, as detailed in the official update from the park district.
Residents and visitors, if you're aiming to stay looped in or you're planning a trek to the Gateway, the Park District has your back. They've mapped out all the road and trail detours, which you can snag a glimpse of on their website. Keeping the community in the loop is part of the plan, ensuring that, while the construction might disrupt our immediate gratification, the expectation for the forthcoming outdoor sanctuary continues to blossom.
