Residents of Carroll County are invited to the third annual Environmental Symposium on Saturday morning, October 26. According to the Carroll County Government, the event will run from 9 AM to noon at the Carroll County Agriculture Center, 706 Agricultural Center Drive, Westminster. It’s a free public event focusing on local environmental efforts and education.
The symposium will provide a platform for community groups to engage residents on influential environmental practices. Demonstrations and learning experiences will be offered, ranging from the University of Maryland Extension Bay-Wise Committee's approach to healthy waterways to how local Girl Scout Troop 1290 plays a role in the community's environmental consciousness. According to the county’s announcement, Carroll County Floodplain Management staff will also collaborate with the Army Corps to educate attendees on flood prevention and response.
Family-friendly activities are also scheduled, including the Carroll County Public Library's Storytime Express and attractions like the University of Maryland Insect Zoo. The first 200 attendees will have the additional perk of receiving free daffodil bulbs. Prizes will be awarded throughout the event, including several trees, a rain barrel, a compost bin, and a countertop compost bin.
Enthusiasts of sustainable living can purchase compost bins and rain barrels through an online sale that runs until October 20. The pickup is slated during the symposium itself. "The Master Gardeners will be providing a demonstration on rain barrel setup at 10:00 AM," as cited in the county's press release.
