In a significant legal decision, 56-year-old Dennis Pegues has been handed a 68-year sentence following his conviction for a series of egregious sex crimes. The sentencing was announced by the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Office, as described in a report by qcnews.com. The jury found Pegues guilty of multiple charges, including first-degree rape and statutory rape, culminating a trial that started on September 9th.
The trial saw testimony from two survivors of Pegues's abuse—now adults—who revealed the persistent assaults that took place from 1998 through 2004. Having wielded a "position of trust," Pegues was accused of repeatedly attacking one survivor, starting when she was just seven years old. "No one will believe you," was what Pegues chillingly told the young girl, attempting to silence her, according to Charlotte Alerts News.
The case's wrenching details were further illuminated when the second victim recounted being offered alcohol by Pegues while babysitting at his home and later being raped. The survivor disclosed this incident to the authorities only after many years, having kept the traumatic experience secret due to Pegues's manipulations and threats. Having gone out with other adults one night, Pegues betrayed his duty as a guardian to prey on those under his care. Following his return, the assault occurred after having offered to take the babysitter home when she inquired about her payment, as narrated by the WCCB Charlotte report.
It wasn't until 2018 that the full extent of Pegues's abuses came to light, consequent to both survivors learning of each other's suffering. Together, they brought their shared nightmare to the attention of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, leading to Pegues's conviction. Sentenced by Superior Court Judge David Strickland, Pegues now faces a future behind bars, a consequence starkly contrastive to the freedom he stripped from his victims over those harrowing years.
