A tragic incident shook Sacramento on Sunday evening when a car collision with a tree resulted in serious injuries for a minor. According to ABC10, the accident was reported just before 4 p.m. near the intersection of J Street and State University Drive, close to Sacramento State. When police arrived, they found one vehicle had hit a tree and three individuals were hurt.
The driver and a passenger, both adult men, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a local hospital. The minor, on the other hand, sustained life-threatening injuries. J Street was closed between 57th and Carlson Drive while the police conducted their investigation into the crash, which remains under review with no immediate cause identified, CBS News Sacramento reported.
In this congested section of Sacramento, the incident has raised concerns among residents and frequent passersby. "The way the infrastructure feeds the cars onto this street it's like a highway on-ramp and they need to install some calming measures because people drive through there at crazy speeds," one cyclist, who regularly travels the area, told CBS News Sacramento.
"At this point, it doesn't appear that the child was ejected, however, they are facing some serious injuries," Allison Smith, a Sacramento Police Department public information officer mentioned, in a statement obtained by CBS News Sacramento. The child was reportedly secured in a car seat in the back of the vehicle at the time of the collision. Smith also added a reminder about safety, "Wear your seat belt, slow down, prevent any distractions."
The sentiment around the area, particularly among those familiar with the dangers of the intersection, took a serious turn after the incident. A local bicyclist expressed his frustration to CBS News Sacramento, saying, "It sucks that it takes people dying before people pay attention to this stuff." Police are still investigating the crash and have not ruled out any causes, but they confirmed that drugs and alcohol were not involved.
