In a sobering reminder of the ongoing issues related to guns in schools, Choctaw High School was placed under lockdown after a student discovered a handgun clip in the school's parking lot. The incident happened on a Monday, prompting a swift response from the school officials and law enforcement.
According to OKC FOX, a message sent out to parents by the Choctaw-Nicoma Park School District stated that "a student found the clip in the lower parking lot and turned it in to Chief Bosse." An investigation was initiated while the school remained on lockdown as a precaution, although "No threats or weapons have been reported," according to the district's message. Out of an abundance of caution, the lockdown was put into effect while they investigated the disturbing find.
The school district's police chief, Robert Bosse, is currently overseeing the ongoing investigation, as high school students and staff endure the heightened tension caused by such events. As reported by KOCO, the district has communicated to parents the assurance that no immediate danger has been declared but remains vigilant in the face of the potential threat that the presence of ammunition on school grounds carries.
Receiving the unsettling discovery of the handgun clip from a student, Choctaw High School's administration and the Choctaw Police Department are working together to resolve the situation. The Choctaw Police Department confirmed the findings and the subsequent lockdown, with information provided by News9 that "a student made them aware of the item." The district has pledged to keep families informed, stating that further updates will be sent as they become available.
