"When our department undertakes a public art project, we turn to this list to find the right partners to realize the community's vision," Director Krystal Jones of the Department of Arts & Culture told the City of San Antonio. Aimed at artists and support service providers from local, state, national, and international backgrounds, the list is meant to reflect a diverse range of talents, expanding San Antonio's aesthetic for those who live in and visit the city. It's an opportunity to significantly influence how San Antonio will be experienced by visitors and residents alike, potentially for generations. The open call explicitly seeks professional qualifications from artists and also from individuals and businesses delivering support services such as design, fabrication, installation, marketing, and more—artists looking to meaningfully, possibly enduringly, etch their mark on the city's cultural landscape.
Moving away from an annual routine, the program will now shift to a biennial application process after this cycle, with the next call for applicants slated for 2026. The Department offers prospects in a rich array of creative endeavors, spanning two-dimensional works, three-dimensional installations, functional art, and other forms of visual communication. Selected applicants, once given a nod by the City Council, will find themselves eligible for up to six years to partner on various projects.
