In Clay County, a firm "zero tolerance policy" on school threats has been reinforced through a series of videos released by Sheriff Michelle Cook and District Schools Superintendent David Broskie. This action is a direct response to a string of students in Northeast Florida being apprehended for allegedly making threats against schools.
“I want to assure all of you that any sort of tip, no matter what format they come in, is investigated thoroughly,” Cook declared in an educational video posted to social media. News4Jax reports that the investigation process initiates with identifying the tipster, leading to a search for the originator of the concerning statement. The context and intent behind the statement are then rigorously assessed through interviews and searches.
Parallel to the criminal inquiry, a school investigation is also undertaken. Superintendent Broskie explained to News4Jax, "Now simultaneously, while all that criminal investigation is going on, there’s a school investigation." This involves a state-wide threat assessment team comprising a school resource officer, a guidance counselor, and faculty members who analyze the threat.
Discipline within the schools is swift and severe for confirmed threats, with Broskie emphasizing the consequences. “We’re going to handle that to the maximum extent that we can,” he stated, noting the typical punishment entails a 10-day suspension and a recommendation of expulsion. In another cautionary note on News4Jax, he urged, “So please please, please think before you say something. Pause before you post.” Action News Jax corroborates Broskie’s message to students, indicating the zero-tolerance stance the county maintains.
The Clay County Sheriff's Office has been active in engaging the community through social media, suggesting that everyone view the released videos and share them with children and others in the community. Their Facebook page hosts the videos, including those showing how tips are investigated and how parents should talk to their students about such threats. The official Clay County Sheriff's Office, Florida Facebook page echoes the sentiment of zero tolerance when it comes to safety in schools.
