In Clover, South Carolina, 66-year-old Victoria Leger died after being hit by a vehicle while clearing debris from Hurricane Helene. The York County Coroner confirmed the accident occurred on Friday on Lawrence Road. Leger was taken to CaroMont Hospital in Gastonia, N.C., where she passed away the next day, as reported by WBTV.
South Carolina Highway Patrol informed Queen City News that a group was in the roadway cutting up the tree when a 2013 Ram pickup truck collided with the tree and at least four pedestrians, resulting in Leger's death and injuries to others. The driver of the vehicle was unharmed, and ongoing investigations will determine whether charges will be filed.
South Carolina has experienced significant losses from Hurricane Helene, with the Department of Public Safety reporting 29 storm-related deaths statewide as of 6 a.m. yesterday. In total, more than 100 people have been confirmed killed by the storm across multiple states, including 30 fatalities in Buncombe County, NC, according to a WCNC. Amidst this devastation, President Joe Biden has pledged federal support, stating that the administration is prepared to aid states "everything we have" to manage the crisis. He has further plans to visit the affected areas, cautiously ensuring that his presence will not impede ongoing rescue or recovery efforts.
