Howard County is upping its game with a new oasis for skateboarders and pickleball enthusiasts. County Executive Calvin Ball has put shovel to dirt, signaling the start of yet another exciting transformation at Blandair Regional Park in Columbia. According to details from Howard County's official announcement, we're talking a 15,000-square-foot skatepark designed to cater to every ollie and grind imaginable. Whether you're new to skating or can do kickflips effortlessly, this park has something for you. Plus, there are six new lighted pickleball courts for sports fans that are becoming popular in the suburbs.
However, there's room for traditionalists too. The park won’t skimp on basketball – with two new lighted courts coming up. Night owls can shoot hoops ‘til the stars come out. Plus, over a hundred new parking spots will be integrated alongside the other amenities to keep the traffic jams to a minimum.
“This next phase of Blandair Regional Park’s expansion is set to deliver an exciting array of new amenities designed to meet the diverse recreational needs of our community," Executive Calvin Ball stated, as per Howard County news release. It seems they're not holding back in their mission to make Blandair the go-to spot for recreational activities in the area. Alongside the skatepark and pickleball courts, improved walkways will thread through the park, enhancing overall accessibility.
And it's not just officials who are buzzing about the park’s evolution. Jeremy Bergolios, a local community member, shared with the county's news release that skating became a haven for him, providing "a palette, also known as a skatepark, to allow for creative expression" that is crucial to mental and physical health. Similarly, the Howard County Pickleball Association’s head honcho, Andy Dalal, highlighted the sport's inclusive nature, emphasizing that the new courts will serve the surging interest and help bring people together.
