The Concord community reels from a recent theft at Feathered Follies, a local pet shop known for its exotic birds. Over the weekend, an intruder shattered a window and stole two beloved avian residents, Tofu and Plato. Tofu, an umbrella cockatoo, and Plato, an African red-belly parrot, were absent. KTVU reports the shop owner, Mercedes Kemp, is devastated and suspects the motive behind the theft was to sell Tofu, which is valued at a few thousand dollars.
The pet shop took to social media to express their distress, in a post obtained by Feathered Follies' Instagram account, they detailed the incident and pleaded for the public's help, offering a $500 reward for the return of either bird or $1,000 for both, the anguish palpable in their words. They describe Tofu as proficient in saying "Hi Tofu," "Hello," and variations of "I love you,". In contrast, Plato is quieter, occasionally voicing "Hello" and "Hi Plato." The post also notes Plato lacks the typical red coloring for its species, hinting at its possible female gender. Neither bird has a leg band, heightening concerns for their safe recovery.
In a communal bid to increase the chances of Tofu and Plato's return, Feathered Follies has launched a GoFundMe campaign. The fund aims to bolster the reward money. They emphasize that these birds are more than pets. They are loved members of their family.
