The Coon Rapids City Council, during their Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2024 gathering, took diverse actions impacting community safety, housing, infrastructure, and finances. Upon accepting a CenterPoint Energy community safety grant, the council strengthened resources designated toward keeping residents safe. The meeting also included the adoption of a resolution that would accept a victim services grant, further bolstering support for those who find themselves navigating the aftermath of crime.
On the housing front, a plan for a new eight-unit apartment project was approved, aimed to assist Family Promise in Anoka County, located at 340 95th Ave. Signifying forward motion, resolutions commanding the preparation of feasibility reports and plans for the 2025 street reconstruction were also adopted, addressing the perennial dance with infrastructure and its upkeep.
Progress was not confined to the physical space of the city. The council moved to modernize local legislation by introducing an ordinance that amends City Code related to waste collection and recycling. This is in keeping with the broader environmental concerns that are increasingly shaping municipal policies.
With consideration for public amenities, the council pushed for the betterment of local facilities by adopting a resolution that approves plans and specifications and orders the advertisement for bids for the upcoming 2024 Lift Station rehabilitation project. The Coon Rapids Ice Center, a hub for community gatherings and athletic events, saw its rental rates and fee structure established for 2024-2025. Simultaneously, user contracts for the Ice Center during the same period were ratified.
Financial planning was also on the agenda, with the council establishing the preliminary tax levy for 2025. The implications of the set tax levy are yet to unfold, but it stands as an indicator of the city’s direction and financial health.
