Residents, visitors, and commuters in D.C. face a slew of street closures and parking restrictions this weekend as the city engages in its annual celebration of cycling, the DC Bike Ride. The event will take place today and tomorrow, with a varied schedule of street closures to accommodate the expected wave of bicyclists.
According to a traffic advisory released by the Metropolitan Police Department, several streets including stretches of Pennsylvania Avenue, NW and Constitution Avenue, NW will be posted as "Emergency No Parking" and will be closed starting today at 6:00 p.m., until tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. Motorists are advised to be mindful of these restrictions, as vehicles parked in violation of the emergency signs will be ticketed, and towed.
Further closures will take effect in the wee hours tomorrow morning, at 2:30 a.m., impacting thoroughfares such as 14th Street, NW and Independence Avenue, NW, and are expected to last until 11:00 a.m. or 12:00 p.m., depending on the location. These restrictions are anticipated to significantly disrupt the typical ebb and flow of weekend traffic and could result, in delays for those driving through these normally bustling corridors.
The Police Department and the D.C. Department of Transportation are urging drivers who must travel near the event's footprint to consider alternate routes and exercise extra caution due to the increased presence of pedestrians and cyclists. For real-time traffic updates, those affected can turn to the police's traffic information X account, x.com/DCPoliceTraffic. While all street closures are subject to change based on conditions on the ground, the authorities have pledged to keep the public informed and updated as the event progresses.
