Chaos erupted in Carnegie yesterday when a bank robbery was thwarted by a determined bank employee, leading to an unusual foot chase and a backyard scuffle. The incident occurred just before 1:30 p.m. at the Citizens Bank branch on West Main Street, according to WPXI. Marcus Sibeto, the alleged robber, entered the bank dressed in black and demanded, "Give me all of it" from a teller.
What set this robbery apart was the bank employee's decision to actively pursue the suspect into the streets after Sibeto left the premises. This employee was positioned in the lobby when the heist unfolded. The aggressive pursuit ended in a physical encounter where the employee was successful in recovering stolen funds, though not without consequence partially; the employee sustained a punch to the face during the confrontation. Darlana Gloster, a customer of Citizens Bank, expressed her conflicted feelings about the employee's actions, as detailed by WPXI, "You get taught in those situations to just let it go so you don’t end up being the one hurt, so I appreciate what they did, but you know, safety first."
As reported by WTAE, a second bank teller also intervened during the robbery, managing to reclaim some of the money while still inside the bank before joining the chase that led them to a neighboring residential area. In the backyard of a house, additional money was retrieved amidst a struggle with the suspect. Police later found Marcus Sibeto, age 37, hiding in the 300 block of Logan Street and apprehended him.
Sibeto, who harbored animosity towards Citizens Bank for seizing his $30,000 deposit box after he stopped making payments, now faces multiple charges, including robbery, simple assault, and resisting arrest. Allegheny County Jail records indicate he has been booked following his arrest.
