DeKalb County pet owners and animal lovers are in for a treat as local commissioners team up to host an engaging community event. Commissioners Mereda Davis Johnson of District 5, and Michelle Long Spears of District 2, invite residents to the Companion Animals and Friends event. Scheduled for October 5 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Redan Recreation Center, the event aims to provide free resources for pet care and promote the welfare of companion animals.
"This event is about bringing our community together to support our furry companions and the residents who care for them," Commissioner Mereda Davis Johnson said in DeKalb County's annoucement. The initiative called Save Our DeKalb Animals not only addresses animal challenges but also, celebrates the bond between people and their pets. Resources offered include free vaccines and microchipping, alongside valuable TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) vouchers for controlling the cat population humanely.
The day will feature animal-related talks from representatives of organizations such as DeKalb Animal Enforcement and Kirk Cats. Advocates for DeKalb Animals, among others, will be present to discuss the benefits of community engagement in animal wellbeing. Furthermore, the event presents an opportunity for prospective pet owners to adopt a pet in need of a home.
"We want to ensure that every pet and pet owner has access to the resources they need," Commissioner Michelle Long Spears stated in the county's announcement. She stressed the importance of the community event as an avenue for residents to connect with essential services for their pets. Adding that, the collaboration with Commissioner Johnson represents a step towards building a community where animal safety and affection are prioritized.
Residents interested in accessing the free pet vaccines are encouraged to sign up in advance. You can visit DeKalb County website for more information.
