This Saturday, the DeKalb County Police Department is set to host a Community Outreach & Safety Fair, offering a variety of free resources to residents. The event is scheduled to take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Big Lots parking lot on Chamblee Tucker Road. Activities for the day include games, music, and free items such as gun safes, while supplies last.
"We want to take this opportunity to bring needed resources into the community and are asking anyone who needs a gun safe to please come out and get one free of charge," said DeKalb County Police Chief Mirtha V. Ramos, according to a statement on the department's website. The fair aims to not just entertain but to also connect residents with information and resources focused on safety and community well-being.
Among the practical giveaways are free kids' haircuts, blood pressure checks, vitamin kits, snacks, ICEEs, and even raffles for items including furniture and a 65-inch TV. Children can look forward to receiving book bags filled with goodies and stand a chance to win a bike. Additionally, attendees can participate in car seat checks and receive DIY kits provided by Home Depot.
Education on creating a neighborhood watch and details on employment opportunities for youth will also be available, with the Worksource DeKalb Bus onsite to offer guidance. The fair is expected to provide meetings with representatives from various departments, including the Tax Commissioner’s Office, Code Enforcement, and the School Board with its Mobile learning bus. The DeKalb County Police Department will showcase its specialized units like SWAT, K-9, Bomb, Motors, Community Policing Unit, and PAL.
