Authorities in Detroit have launched a manhunt for a suspected shooter after a police standoff that continued for hours before the individual in question evaded capture. As reported by CBS News Detroit, the incident occurred on Whitfield Street just before 3 p.m. Friday and involved a victim who had been shot three times following an alleged domestic dispute involving the suspect and the victim's mother. Deputy Chief Arnold Williams indicated the suspect retreated into a house after the shooting took place.
The victim, whose current state was described by authorities as temporarily serious, received medical attention at a local hospital. According to details from WXYZ, police established contact with the man during the standoff, which ended inconclusively around 12:30 a.m. after officers entered the house to find it empty. The evasion by the suspect adds a layer of tension to a city already grappling with challenges of crime and violence.
As the search for the suspected shooter continues, police have disclosed that the individual has a history of felony convictions and was armed with various weapons, including long guns and handguns. Deputy Chief Williams highlighted to reporters the dangerous nature of the suspect, sharing that "We know that the individual has a past of felonies. He has done some violent things in the past. We know he is armed with many different weapons — some long guns, some handguns," as per WXYZ.
The efforts to resolve the situation and protect the community during the standoff involved the deployment of gas canisters and diversionary devices, aiming for a peaceful outcome. "We ask that if anybody is in the area of Underwood (Avenue) and Joy Road to be patient with us because we have the area blocked off pretty much just for everyone's safety," Williams said in a statement retrieved by ClickOnDetroit. He also appealed directly to the suspect, urging him to surrender to the authorities peacefully.
Detroit police have committed numerous resources to ensure public safety in the aftermath of the shooting and standoff. They have coordinated with fire and EMS services and have involved units from the metropolitan division and officers from the 10th Precinct. Detroit police are asking for the community's patience as they work towards a resolution. "We have a lot of resources out here. We have the fire department. We have the EMS. We have units from the metropolitan division. We have officers from the 10th Precinct. So again, we’re trying to make sure we bring this to a peaceful resolution," maintained Williams as conveyed by ClickOnDetroit.
