The Miami-Dade Police Department has released bodycam footage documenting the contentious detainment of Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill. The incident occurred Sunday, preceding a Dolphins home game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Hill was pulled over for what initially was a routine traffic stop for speeding in his sports car. However, the situation quickly escalated when Hill rolled up his vehicle's window during the encounter, resulting in police physically extracting him from the car and forcing him to the ground. The WFLA report provides the video evidence of the events leading to his restraint.
According to the bodycam footage shared by the police, Hill is seen complying with an officer's request to show his driver's license but then closing his window, which prompts the officer to demand he get out of the car. Hill can be heard on the phone saying he's getting arrested while police hold him down. TMZ Sports, having obtained a longer cut of the footage, shows Hill informing the officers that he had recently undergone knee surgery as he is forced to the sidewalk. The Miami Dolphins expressed their disquiet: "We are saddened by the overly aggressive and violent conduct directed towards Tyreek Hill, Calais Campbell and Jonnu Smith by police officers before yesterday's game." The Bleacher Report provides insights into the team's official stance on the matter.
In light of the altercation, one police officer has been placed on administrative leave as the department commences an internal investigation into the officers' conduct. NBC Los Angeles reports that Hill, while speaking with NBC News, reflected on the incident, remarking, "If I wasn't Tyreek Hill, lord knows, I probably would have been like, worst-case scenario, I would have been shot or would have been locked up" and "put behind bars, you know, for a simple speeding ticket."
Despite the unsettling incident, Hill played in Sunday's game, making seven catches for 130 yards and a touchdown.
