Downtown Duluth will see a change in its traffic pattern starting Tuesday, October 1st, as a block section of First Avenue East undergoes temporary closure for utility repairs. According to a recent city announcement, the closure between First Street and Second Street is a planned measure that will pave the way for the essential maintenance work, extending through Friday, October 11.
The road and sidewalks within the affected area will be off-limits, and a detour will be clearly posted for both pedestrians and motorists. The recommended alternative route encompasses First Street, Lake Avenue, Second Street, and Second Avenue East. This disruption, set to last for approximately ten days, will necessitate that those moving through the area stay alert to detour signage, aiming to minimize the closure's impact on the daily commute.
Additional changes are also on the books, as Second Street will see the closure of both its parking lane and one travel lane around the intersection with First Avenue East. "No parking" signs are due to be installed and their warnings enforced to keep the area clear for the duration of the work. Despite these constraints, two lanes on Second Street will thankfully remain open, thus sustaining a partial flow of through traffic.
Furthermore, residents and local patrons accustomed to using the alley between First and Second Streets for access have been advised to reroute via Lake Avenue or Second Avenue East during this period. The alleyway crossing at First Avenue East will not be available, a change that reflects the broader scope of ongoing infrastructure improvements in the area.
This temporary closure signals just the beginning of a larger project which will ultimately involve future closures on First Avenue East stretching between First Street and Fourth Street. As work progresses, the community can expect updates to be promptly shared, keeping them informed of the evolving construction landscape.
