Quick thinking and a donated medical device were the heroes of the day in Dunwoody on August 12, when Sgt. Nelson of the Dunwoody Police Department saved an 18-month-old from a choking hazard. According to the City of Dunwoody's official news release, police responded to a call on Queensborough Dr at 5:53 pm, where they found an unconscious child, blue, and not breathing effectively. Sgt. Nelson used the LifeVac choking device to clear the child's airway of food and fluid.
Support from the Dunwoody Police Foundation made this rescue possible, as they had equipped every police car with the LifeVac device. Not long after Sgt. Nelson's intervention, with the help of DeKalb Fire Engine 12, the child began to breathe independently and regain consciousness. By the time they reached CHOA Scottish Rite, transported by AMR, the young life was well on its way to recovery, and a full recovery was made.
The Dunwoody Police Foundation. Sgt. Nelson, honored for his life-saving actions, received a Medal of Meritorious Service at the city council meeting last Monday.
The details of the dramatic rescue have resonated in the community, and the police department appreciates the equipment that helped Sgt. Nelson act quickly. For more information or media requests about the event, inquiries should be directed to Sgt. Michael Cheek via email. The City of Dunwoody and its officials commend the bravery shown and the effectiveness of proactive safety measures in real-life situations.
